How do you get mold out of a top loading washing machine?

2024-03-02

Mold can develop in washing machines due to moisture, soap residue, and dirt buildup, especially in top-loading machines where water can pool.

Start by wiping down the interior of the washing machine, including the drum, agitator (if present), and any visible mold or mildew spots, with a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water. Use a sponge or cloth to scrub the affected areas thoroughly.

Many washing machines have a cleaning cycle option specifically designed to remove mold, mildew, and residue. If your machine has this feature, follow the manufacturer's instructions for running a cleaning cycle. Alternatively, you can run a hot water cycle with no clothes and add 2 cups of white vinegar to the water to help disinfect and clean the machine.

Remove the detergent dispenser drawer (if applicable) and clean it thoroughly with warm, soapy water. Use a brush or sponge to scrub away any residue or mold buildup. Rinse the drawer thoroughly and allow it to dry completely before reinserting it into the washing machine.

Check the seals and gaskets around the door or lid of the washing machine for mold or mildew buildup. Wipe them down with a vinegar and water solution or a mild bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Be sure to rinse the seals and gaskets thoroughly after cleaning to remove any residue.

After cleaning, leave the lid or door of the washing machine open to allow air circulation and help dry out the interior. This can help prevent mold and mildew growth in the future.

To prevent mold and mildew buildup in the future, practice regular maintenance of your washing machine. This includes wiping down the interior after each use, leaving the lid or door open to dry out, and periodically running cleaning cycles with vinegar or specialized washing machine cleaner.

By following these steps, you can effectively remove mold from your top-loading washing machine and prevent it from recurring in the future.
